A Christmas skating rink has been closed after the ice melted following problems with a power generator.Organisers Ice Skate Southampton said the city’s rink had “lost a lot of ice” since the problem began during high winds on Wednesday.Manager Laurie Scott said it had since re-frozen and would reopen at 17:00 GMT.The rink, in the new Public Plaza next to next to medieval towers and walls, is operating until 2 January.
The organisers of the ice rink at Winchester Cathedral showed little sympathy for their neighbouring city’s difficulties.A posting on their Facebook page said: “Southampton ice rink closed this week? Oh no! Don’t panic! You can still skate on Winchester Cathedral Ice Rink thanks to our spectacular wind resistant roof!”Southampton City Council had allowed the attraction to run over the Christmas period despite concerns from a conservation group it would “harm their significance”.Historic England said the rink would “detract from the aesthetic and architectural” importance of the Town Walls.
